On 1 January 2009 Statutory Order no. 1217 on batteries and accumulators and waste batteries and accumulators entered into force (Battery Order). The Battery Order implements parts of the EU Battery Directive from 2006 and concerns rules on producer responsibility for producers and importers of batteries and accumulators.
This directive also contains rules on requirements for contents of certain dangerous substances as well as marking of batteries. These rules appear from a statutory order on import, sale, and export of batteries and accumulators.
The overall objective of the EU Battery Directive is to minimize negative impacts on the environment from batteries and accumulators and waste batteries and accumulators and in this way contribute to protection, conservation, and improvement of our environment.
In December 2009 an amended version of the Battery Order (no. 1186) entered into force.
